German/Popeye Pancakes

This is my mum's recipe, and we have it every time I go to Utah for Christmas. I don't know if German Pancakes really have German origins, it could be one of those "french toast" or "french fry" things. We used to call them Popeye pancakes when I was a kid. We also used to put ketchup on tacos, but that's a different story. In any case, these are delicious for breakfast, and I recommend slathering them with apple syrup, a recipe for which you will also find posted in the comments. How do they puff up so nicely? As with so many things in life, the key is BUTTER.

3) sprinkle with powdered sugar

APPLE SYRUP

1 cup apple juice
1 Tbsp. cornstarch mixed with ½ cup sugar
1 Tbsp lemon or orange juice
cinnamon
nutmeg
1 Tbsp. butter

1) bring to boil on stove top then add butter if you're not afraid to be fancy

Hello Kitchen Guy. Super-neat blog!! My mom is German as well...Bremen. But, I've never seen a recipe for German pancakes like this. Interesting and easier, heheh. Rather neat how it is sometimes geography that adds the twist. From what part of Germany does your mother hail?

PS: When I was a kid I used to call them roll-up pancakes. My mom made them in a medium frying pan, flipped them, put Apricot jam in the middle, rolled them up and sprinkled with powdered sugar! YUM!

OK... I thought that my mom was the only person that called them Popeye pancakes. The funny thing is I am from Utah too. Your blog post freaked me out a bit because the ketchup on tacos is a bit too familiar. Did she also put leftover otmeal in the meatloaf? Thanks for the Popeye Pancake recipe. I will have to try the apple syrup.

A little to funny, or scary on how you put it. My mother used make something that she called flapjacks, it was kind of like a crepe but with jam rolled up inside of it. Man were those good!! And I hair from Manitoba Canada, not utah and my mom put oatmeal in her meatloaf...to funny.

I think these should be called Utah pancakes as I grew up in Utah as well, and was online looking for the recipe. although I heard its pretty much yorkshire pudding.
